Even though he isn’t always meeting them in the best situation, Scott Quick’s favorite part of his job is the people and interacting with the community.

Scott is a crew leader in the gas department, which means responding when a citizen reports a potential gas leak or turning a meter off when the bill isn’t paid. He also services and installs meters all over town.

“There’s a lot of different people and different ways of doing things. Sometimes you get cussed; sometimes you’re the best guy in the world because you’re there to turn on the gas when it’s cold.”

Scott has worked on the city’s gas system for about 26 years, first through a contractor and then as a city employee. When not in the field, the crew is also kept busy with testing to maintain their credentials.

“There’s a lot of hands on, but then there’s a lot of (requirements). Because we’re governed by the Public Service Commission, we have to qualify certain things to be able to do this job,” he said. “We used to do it in-house on the testing desk … we’d have to do so many tests a year to be qualified to do the pipe fitter position. Now a company is going to come in and qualify us hands on, and we’ve got a new system to the computer.”

Outside of work, Scott is a father of four. He enjoys hunting and fishing along with traveling to Florida to visit Disney.

“I used to be into NASCAR quite a bit. Now, not so much,” he said. “It changed a lot of rules and a lot of people have retired.”
